“THERE’S A GOOD IMMIGRANT”: PUBLICIS UK TO CELEBRATE THE VIBRANT AND CREATIVE CULTURE THAT MIGRATION INSPIRES 

A celebration of multiculturalism is to take place at 82 Baker Street - the home of Publicis UK - in the form of a thought-provoking and topical exhibition running from 17 August - 1 September 2017. 

There’s a Good Immigrant will celebrate the creativity and diverse perspectives that migrants bring to British culture and the creative industries. Showcasing artists who are migrants themselves, second-generation migrants, or whose work encourages reflections on migration, the show will feature an array of artistic media - from painting, photography, sculpture and collage, to spoken word and virtual reality animation. 

The visual and spoken word artists taking part are: Ildikó Buckley & Jane Palmer, Dave Buonaguidi, Suchi Chidambaram, Inua Ellams, Alison Jackson, Hormazd Narielwalla, Keith Piper, Sara Pope, Jaspreet Sangha, Sara Shamsavari, Bob & Roberta Smith and Abbas Zahedi. An animated, virtual reality piece by Aardman will also be on display.

Highlight works on display include Immigration Is A Good Thing For British Culture by Bob and Roberta Smith, known for his awareness-raising protest art in the form of placard paintings; a photographic series by Sara Shamsavari that explores global identities amidst division and conflict; a provocative lookalike photograph by Alison Jackson showing Donald Trump posing for a picture with members of the Ku Klux Klan; a limited edition silk screen print, Reviewing the future in broken English, by Keith Piper, founder member of the BLK Art Group, the groundbreaking association of black British artists formed in the 1980s; Hormazd Narielwalla’s Lost Gardens collage series, the artist’s response to Brexit as a recent migrant; and Lost and Found: Seven Sisters by Abbas Zahedi, one of the artists currently exhibiting as part of the Diaspora Pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale. 

Artist Bob and Roberta Smith said: “Art is necessarily an international language. Immigration to Britain has made Britain an amazing culture, stronger with depth of appreciation of others woven into it. We are not an ignorant or naive monoculture, we are a polyphonic multi-faceted super abundant multiculture.”

Also featured in the exhibition will be a recording of internationally touring poet Inua Ellams’ Private School, an act of remembrance showing the repercussions of the transatlantic slave trade, as well as Aardman & BBC’s virtual reality experience, We Wait, which gives users a visceral understanding of what it’s like to be on board a smugglers boat as a migrant. Based on BBC News interviews with migrants, the hard-hitting VR animation will transport visitors to the heart of the refugee crisis, highlighting the sense of suspense and anticipation felt by displaced people journeying to Europe. 

Conceived by advertising creative director Jo Wallace and developed in collaboration with curator Erin Manns and arts communications consultant Helena Zedig, There’s a Good Immigrant intends to provide a space for addressing the lack of diversity within the advertising industry.

We need to reflect this melting pot of talent, with diverse voices, skin tones and perspectives in ads and that starts with welcoming greater diversity into agencies and marketing departments. With There’s a Good Immigrant, we aim to not only inspire clients and creatives from all backgrounds but also to provoke positive debate within the wider industry and beyond.”

Funds raised through works that will on sale at the exhibition will be donated to arts charity Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts), an evolving, radical visual arts organisation dedicated to developing an artistic programme that reflects on the social and political impact of globalization.

HAVANA: SIGNIFICATIONS

THE PROVINCIAL CENTER OF PLASTIC ART AND DESIGN, OLD HAVANA, CUBA

Ten works by Sara Shamsavari feature in Havana: Significations.

Africa as a place and a font of diaspora has long served as an energizing if contentious context for producing, mediating, and sustaining art and art making. Africa: Significations is a dialogic exhibition that frames contemporary imaginations of a capacious Africa as a subject of conversation among artists from all over the Atlantic World.

It extends a previous exhibition ReSignifications, that opened in Florence, Italy, in 2015. That exhibition offered a revision of, and re-engagement with, the history and historicity of black portraitures by inviting contemporary artists from Africa, Europe and the Americas to translate and re-stage a collection of sculptures and paintings depicting ornamental black bodies associated with decorative art known to us as “Blackamoors.” Embedded within centuries-old discourses, cross-cultural encounters, and artistic productions shaped by migration, conquest, servitude, and exile, these objects presented a rich opportunity for artists to deconstruct, compare, and contextualize portrayals of the black body in western societies from multidisciplinary angles.
Significations builds on the curatorial narrative of that exhibition by staging works in which African and African diasporic conventions of theme and style inscribe such ideas as subjectivity, citizenship, and spirituality into the larger, trans-African world of art-making. From geometry and calligraphy, through paintings and sculptures, to music and photography, Significations will offer a dialogic display of visual and performing arts that archives the texts and methods of an expansive contemporary Africa.

In Havana (Cuba) the exhibition will be titled Significations (May 2-30th.2017) and in Lagos (Nigeria) it will be titled ReInventions (May 20-July 30th.2017). Works from both exhibitions will add to ReSignifications that opens in Palermo (Italy) under the MANIFESTA biennale in 2018.

DANDY LION: (RE)ARTICULATING BLACK MASCULINE IDENTITY

Dandy Lion: (Re)Articulating Black Masculine Identity seeks to distinguish the historical and contemporary expressions of the Black Dandy phenomenon in popular culture. The first comprehensive exhibition of its kind, this project highlights young men in city-landscapes who defy stereotypical and monolithic understandings of Black masculinity by remixing Victorian-era fashion with traditional African sartorial sensibilities. Using their self-fashioned bodies as sites of resistance, contemporary Black Dandies are complicating modern narratives of what it means to be Black, masculine and fashionable today. Dandy Lion: (Re)Articulating Black Masculine Identity features work from emerging and renowned photographers and filmmakers from the US, Europe and Africa, including Hanif Abur-Rahim, Jody Ake, Laylah Amatullah Barrayn, Rose Callahan, Kia Chenelle, Bouba Dola, Adama Delphine Fawundu, Russell K. Frederick, Cassi Amanda Gibson, Allison Janae Hamilton, Akintola Hanif, Harness Hamese/Loux the Vintage Guru, L. Kasimu Harris, Jamala Johns, Caroline Kaminju, Charl Landvreugd, Jati Lindsay, Devin Mays, Terence Nance, Arteh Odjidja, Numa Perrier, Alexis Peskine, Radcliffe Roye, Sara Shamsavari, Nyugen Smith, Daniele Tamagni, Richard Terborg and Rog Walker. This exhibition is guest-curated by US-based independent curator Shantrelle P. Lewis.

Sara Shamsavari will be keynote speaker at Oxford University's Wadham Race Symposium .This year's theme, ‘Can Multiculturalism Work’ aims to explore a key question that shapes the political dialogue of our times within power structures of race. The symposium invites you to consider the ways that education can reinforce colonial powers and legacies, and how members of the university in all capacities can act to prevent or reverse this situation. We will discuss how ‘multiculuralism' has become a dirty word and how we have lost our pride in diversity. The event is free for those of you who can make it book your place here

Talk: Soapbox ep. 3 – 26th Jan, 2017

New year, and the return of the Miniclick Soapbox talks in London. In 2016 we tried out the format of having 5 speakers in one evening, each doing very short sub-7min talks on any subject they like. The result was a fast-paced evening in the pub were the audience were bombarded with ideas and inspiration, before spending the rest of the evening at the bar chatting about it all.

Sara Shamsavari is a British photographic artist of Iranian heritage who's vibrant and emotive images address current social and cultural concerns. Her works have exhibited internationally in galleries, museums, public and political spaces including the Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago), The Royal Festival Hall (London), Espace Pierre Cardin (Paris) and Rush Arts Gallery (New York). Her work, exhibitions and profile have featured multiple times across various media and publications including BBC1, ITN, Sky 1, Monocle24, The Guardian, New York Times, Elle, i-D and Dazed & Confused.

As the Biennial draws to a close Sara will share her ideas on art and transformation and talk about photography as an instrument for social change in the context of her experiences as an artist creating and exhibiting socially concious work internationally. Shamsavari's portraits for curator Shantrelle P. Lewis' "The Dandy Lion Project" are on view across multiple venues in Brighton's City Centre as part of Photoworks Brighton Biennial (including Magazine Brighton). BRIGHTON PHOTO BIENNIAL 2016

Several works by British photographer Sara Shamsavari have been selected by curator Shantrelle P.Lewis to exhibit at multiple venues in Brighton as part of the European debut of The Dandy LionProject at Brighton Biennial. The exhibition seeks to distinguish global expressions of the BlackDandy phenomenon against the backdrop of contemporary life. The exhibition presents more than150 images from over thirty photographers and filmmakers. The first comprehensive exhibition of itskind, this project highlights young men in cityscapes, defying stereotypical and monolithicunderstandings of Black male identity, by adopting Edwardian-era fashion and fusing this withtraditional African sartorial sensibilities.

Shamsavari’s celebrated images of sartorial men are described as “revealing the power of fashionand art to change our perceptions of the world. On the surface, her work captures the cool and thechic, the people who embrace the power of aesthetic elegance... a closer reading revealsShamsavari’s portraits create a connection between her subjects and the world, acting as a portal to a land where dignity and respect are the basis on which our humanity is met” (Crave) CuratorShantrelle Lewis who started The Dandy Lion Project in 2010 states “I have been a long time fan ofSara Shamsavari’s work. She engages her subjects and captures the whimsical and colourful aspectsof dandyism that make us all enthralled with her images of the U.K.’s most sartorial gentlemen”.Shamsavari has been photographing British, European and American dandies for the project since2013 and is considered among the most prolific of the artists involved.

Following acclaimed showings at Museum of Contemporary Photography – Chicago and Museum ofAfrican Diaspora – San Francisco, this European premiere of The Dandy Lion Project will also includea digital element featuring vintage family and archive images from a special call–out. A bookaccompanying the exhibition will be published by Aperture in Spring 2017.

The first comprehensive exhibition of its kind, Dandy Lion: (Re)Articulating Black Masculine Identity provides an exploration of a popular conversation in nuanced contemporary sartorial expressions and the fluidity of cis-gender Black male masculinity. As a statement, it is not definitive. It is provocative and inquisitive – meant to provoke, indulge and glorify.

The exhibition seeks to distinguish the contemporary expressions of the Black Dandy phenomenon in popular culture. The first comprehensive exhibition of its kind,this project highlights young men in city-landscapeswho defy stereotypical and monolithic understandings of Black masculinity by remixing Victorian-era fashion with traditional African sartorial sensibilities. Sara’s images include a twelve foot mural, and twelve additional portraits ofBritish and European Black Dandies as well as a video installation that documents participants of her work and theirperspectives on Black Dandyism and style. London Veil is an exciting body of work by photographic artist Sara Shamsavari. The series seeks to give prominence to young muslim women in London by documenting and celebrating the expression of their individual identities through their vibrant hijab styles. Images from the series will be exhibited for the first time at the Royal Festival Hall as part of the Southbank's Women of the World (WOW) Festival an annual global festival celebrating women's achievements across the world.

Beauty Untold is a series of portraits that embrace the uncelebrated beauty that exists in everyday people and situations. The exhibition exists to unveil the untold beauty that is present among a diversity of individuals largely ignored by mainstream culture, or otherwise represented in a false or negative light. These striking portraits expose the raw, vibrant and natural appeal of “the street” through a unique empathy shared by the viewer and the viewed. A selection of portraits will be on display as part of tonights MEWE Exchange.

L'Amérique, terre d'opportunités et mère patrie du graffiti, a longtemps été une source d'inspiration pour les artistes du monde entier. Grâce à la puissance de sa culture exportée via le cinéma et la télévision ou à travers les icônes populaires que sont les super-héros de bandes dessinées les grandes marques commerciales, l'impact sur le public de tout ce qui est américain ne cesse de croître et de se propager.

L'exposition de groupe I Love America vise à marier les œuvres d'artistes américains (Jonone, Jaya Bludeau, Native, Quik, Ezo, Paul Santoleri et Keith Haring) et européens (Speedy Graphito, YZ, ZEVS, Dizer, Alberto Vejarano, Cyril Anguelidis, Nick Walker, Sara Shamsavari, Zachary Havas, Studio 21bis, Kathy Wolff, Nicolas Moreau et Sébastien Le Guen) dans une évocation douce-amère des États-Unis.

LOVE IN THE SKY

"Love in the Sky" was created in 2007 by Toni Castells with the intention of bringing together a group of young and emerging artists to collaborate on capturing the essence of love through an image. The exhibition will launch on the 30th of June of 2009 at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. Participating artists are Colin Barnes, Matt Black, Rudy de Belgeonne, Johnny Blue Eyes, Nigel Burnett Hodd, Ned Conran, Liz Dalton, Goldie, Gary Harvey, Eleanor Lyndsay-Finn, Max Lowry, Bruno Maag, Munir Malik, Hoda Mazloomian, Natalie Meyjes, Ben Moore, Jody Norbury, Paul Persky, Dan Prescott, Petroc Sesti, Sara Shamsavari, Baccara Smart, Stedhead, Zak Walters, Leah Wood, Ada Zanditon. The exhibition has been realised in collaboration with the Lottery fund and Nueluxe.

The works of art created, always in collaboration, will be auctioned by ex- Sotheby's and Christie's Auctioneer Terence Rodriguez to raise funds for Coram, a charity who's been providing better chances for underprivileged children since 1739.

Fathers, Brothers and Sons is a photographic exhibition dedicated to men of black and ethnic backgrounds in honour and celebration of the unsung heroes and positive role models that exist within black and minority communities. “Fathers Brothers and Sons” exists to highlight and pay homage to the extraordinary strength of men who are largely ignored or misrepresented in mainstream culture. The images extend beyond those of fathers, grandfathers, sons, brothers and lovers to a exploration of their roles in our communities as businessmen, sports men, fashion designers, musicians and writers. This exhibition is supported by The Princes Trust in association with Swing Baby and The Creative Cycle.

MOVING MOUNTAINS

In April 2008, young artists brought the sounds and stories of London to Mauritius. They travelled with arts professionals from The Midi Music Company, Sensible Music and WAC Performing Arts & Media College to deliver a series of workshops in creative writing, singing, dance and drama, and to help Pentakruz Entertainment Association establish an eco friendly recording studio and arts academy on Mont Brisee mountain.Young British photographer Sara Shamsavari travelled with them to document and interpret the exchange creating the exhibition Moving Mountains.

You Belong to me comprises of the photographic works of Danny Treacy and Sara Shamsavari. The discrepancy between our longing for intimacy and our actual every day interactions is a phenomenon that continually rears its ugly head. To express ones loneliness, fears or confusion is a shameless act of self indulgence, a 21st century taboo right up there with the rejects from Popstars. With the monopolising of cultural landscape courtesy of celebrity obsessions and consumer trends what happens to our ’sense’ of community and our desire for intimacy? This is a question that THE 25 SURVIVORS (creative studio and visual collective) comprising here of two artists are not so much answering as exploding in to Catto Contemporary’s newest exhibition.

Sara Shamsavari is a young British photographer of Iranian origin. Known for her raw and vibrant photographs of street culture Sara’s work has been featred and published in i-D , Touch Graphotism and the Big Issue.

Friom May 7- 31st Sara’s portraits celebrating the diverse staff who work within Selfridges will be on display in Selfridges Oxford Street. Over two months Sara has photographed the staff from Selfridges stores in Manchester, London and offices in Leicester. Her exhibition features 50 members of staff and forms part of Selfridges Body Craze festival which takes place in May.

This exhibition is a record of life in the Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames and has been carried out by a small group of photographers working throughout the year of 2000.

The aim of the project was to produce positive, unbiased spontaneous images, not to comment but to mirror. The exhibition is a visual chronicle- a diary through which having edited a vast number of photographs, has merged the work of each of the photographers in to a whole: careful study, however will reveal their own individual style.
